What Foods Should You Avoid When You Have Dentures?

No one wants to have gaps in their smile. Yet, missing teeth affect many American adults. If you have failing teeth or teeth that have already been extracted, dentures can be a great option for making your smile complete again. However, adjusting to your new dentures can take a little time. Here’s a look at the foods you should be careful with while you’re getting accustomed to life with dentures.

Foods to Avoid

It can take a few days to a few weeks to get used to eating with dentures. In the meantime, stick to soft foods that require little chewing. Examples include yogurt, baked potatoes, and pasta. Even after the adjustment period, you may need to avoid eating sticky foods like peanut butter and caramel, hard foods like raw vegetables and apples, and tough meats that require a lot of chewing, such as steak. If you’re having problems eating foods that don’t require a lot of chewing and aren’t sticky, it can be helpful to cut them into smaller pieces.

Foods to Enjoy Cautiously

Dentures will cover up some of the soft tissues in your mouth. Because of this, it’s best to be careful when enjoying hot beverages like coffee and tea. Your mouth might not immediately sense that a beverage is too hot, but it will still burn the exposed tissues. Take a small sip to test the temperature of your beverages.

It’s also best to exercise caution with nuts and seeds. These foods can be difficult to chew and they may be small enough to slip underneath your dentures. Once your mouth gets used to the dentures and you gain more confidence eating with them, you can cautiously reintroduce nuts and seeds into your diet. However, if you have problems, it may be best to avoid them.
